Understanding Direct Care and Health Sharing Arrangements

These options can sound similar but serve different purposes. This guide explains the basic distinction and the questions families should ask before making a decision.

Direct healthcare services

A direct-service organization provides or coordinates healthcare itself. Visitors should confirm the current locations, clinicians, hours, eligibility, fees, and scope of available services before seeking care.

Health sharing arrangements

A health sharing arrangement generally coordinates voluntary sharing of eligible medical expenses among members. It is not the same as health insurance, and its rules, exclusions, payment process, and legal protections should be reviewed carefully.

Before You Choose

Questions worth asking

  • Does this option deliver healthcare directly, help pay eligible bills, or both?
  • Which services, conditions, and providers are included or excluded?
  • What will I pay before, during, and after a visit?
  • Are payments guaranteed by a contract or dependent on voluntary sharing?
  • How are urgent, hospital, specialist, laboratory, and prescription needs handled?
  • Are there eligibility, faith, lifestyle, location, or waiting-period requirements?
